18KT Yellow Gold 5-Stone Old Cut Diamond Ring

This vintage diamond ring features three Old European cut diamonds, prong-set side by side across the middle. Two smaller round shaped diamonds cap each end making this 5-across ring combine for .46 carats. The 18kt yellow gold setting is low profile and exhibits a scrolled textural design in the undergallery and on the shoulders. An old European cut diamond is a round diamond primarily cut by hand between 1890-1930. They were especially common during the Art Deco period. These antique diamonds were one of the predecessors to the modern round brilliant cut diamond. The biggest visual difference between an old European cut and the modern round brilliant is that the old cut favors dispersion or “fire,” the multi-colored flashes of light from within the stone. On the other hand, the modern round brilliant maximizes sparkle and brilliance, which creates the signature black-and-white pattern you see play across the surface. These two cuts also reflect light in different styles. The antique diamonds have a chunkier pattern of light, while the modern diamonds have a more “splintery” pattern with a greater brilliance or return of white light.
